A comprehensive list of prescription and over the counter medications.
Afrin is a pseudoephedrine, or a sympathomimetic decongestant. By constricting blood vessels, it shrinks swollen and congested nasal tissue, or mucous membranes. This process relieves nasal congestion due to allergies or head colds. Users may also benefit from mucus draining, and better nose breathing. This product does not shorten the length of the common cold, but it does treat the sinus symptoms.
Warnings and Precautions
Do not take Afrin if you are allergic to any ingredient in Afrin, or if you are taking furazolidone or an MAOI, monoamine oxidase inhibitor. Always make sure to contact your doctor before starting a new medicine. Children under 12 should not use Afrin unless prescribed by a doctor. Your pharmacist or doctor can provide additional instructions, warnings, and precautions about taking Afrin.
Outside from congestion relief, improved mucus drainage, and better nose breathing, your doctor may prescribe Afrin for other uses. Using Afrin or other nose drops or sprays provides a more intense and quicker relief from congestion than medicine you may take by mouth.
Some users may experience side effects, while others may not experience any. Sometimes side effects come and go. When using Afrin, caffeine can increase the side effects and large quantities not be consumed. The most common side effects for Afrin are, sneezing, stinging, temporary burning, or nasal discharge. If they become overwhelming or persist over time, consult with your doctor. If more serious side effects occur, such as allergic reactions including rashes, hives, tightness in the chest, swelling of the mouth, lips, face, tongue or difficulty breathing, contact your doctor immediately. You can always report uncommon or new side effects to the Food and Drug Administration.
The medical conditions that interact with Afrin include, pregnancy, allergies, high blood pressure, diabetes, enlarged prostate, overactive thyroid, or heart disease. Always consult with a doctor or pharmacist about the medicine or vitamins you are taking. The following medicines can interact with Afrin: Cocaine, antidepressants, and bromocriptine.
Always follow directions on the package when taking Afrin. Take as directed. Questions about dosages should be directed to your pharmacist or your doctor. The medication is typically taken every 12-24 hours or depending on what your doctor prescribes. Make sure to take under 240 milligrams per day.
As with any drug, call a Poison Control Center or hospital if you feel that you have overdosed on the product.
